The product roadmap. Architecture should support where the product is going, not only where it is today. I look at upcoming features, expected traffic, integrations, and the platform development plan over the next few years before making architectural decisions.
Usually, when a product starts growing. More users, more integrations, and more data expose decisions that worked well in the early stages but no longer fit the product. Planning for that growth early gives the team far more flexibility later.
Much closer than many people expect. Permissions, dashboards, search, notifications, and onboarding all depend on how data is structured behind the interface. We review those decisions together before development begins because changing them later usually affects the entire product.
A good architecture gives the product room to evolve. New features, third-party integrations, or higher traffic shouldn't force the team to rebuild core services every few months. The best systems adapt to change while remaining predictable for both engineers and users.
I like solving problems that people never notice. When data moves reliably, APIs respond quickly, and systems remain stable during releases, users focus on the product rather than the tech behind it. That's usually a sign we've made the right engineering decisions.
